As we are approaching that time of year when the sun finally begins to appear consistently in the skies of the northern hemisphere, many people are starting to turn their thoughts away from the world of work and towards hopes and dreams of that all important time of the year, the summer vacation. When I was younger and, let’s face it, probably worked a little less hard, city breaks were always my favourite type of holiday but now that I’m a little older and a lot busier, I’m increasingly attracted to the prospect of spending some quiet time at the beach. After all, having toiled away behind my desk for months on end during a seemingly endless European winter, what more could I wish for than to spend some me-time lying on the beach, reading a good book, and sipping on a few cocktails.

For those of you who share my increasingly strong love of the beach, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is a great option for your well-deserved summer get-away. The city lies on the eastern coast of the US and due to its relatively southerly location enjoys a sub-tropical climate which is perfect for a summer beach vacation. Which perhaps explains why millions upon millions of tourists choose Myrtle Beach as their holiday destination every year. Of course being such a large tourist attraction means that Myrtle Beach offers a wide variety of things to do for its lucky visitors.

For those of you (or us!) who like to head straight to the beach, there are a number of activities which take place within a stone’s throw of the majestic Atlantic ocean. One great option is horseback riding along the beach which for me always conjures up images of a trashy romantic comedy, but is thoroughly enjoyable nonetheless. Another option, especially if you need to cool down beneath the beating midday¬†sun, is to try your hand at some water-sports including surfing, wind-surfing, and kayaking. Alternatively you could hire a little boat and sail a short (but safe!) distance from the beach to enjoy a little peace and quiet. My only word of warning to you is, be aware that any swimwear item which shows too much flesh is likely to be deemed illegal here so my advice is ladies, and possibly gents, leave those thongs at home!

For those of you who like to get away from the beach, downtown Myrtle Beach also has some great options. For example you could try out one of the numerous restaurants, movie theatres or comedy clubs in the city. Families visiting will also be spoiled for choice with options including a sea-life centre, an amusement park, and for those with a good head for heights, the Myrtle Beach Skywheel.

So with great activities available for beach lovers, families, and fantastic hotels in Myrtle Beach, this little gem has everything you could ever wish for. So the only question remaining is, what are you waiting for!?
