If you are anything like me, each year you will spend all winter looking forward to the onset of summer so you can finally top up your vitamin D levels again. If so, those of you who are eager to soak up the sun and get back out into the outdoors could do a lot worse than to start thinking about a summer vacation to Lake Placid in the US.

For many people when you say Lake Placid it immediately conjures up nightmares of the terrible film about man-eating crocodiles but those in the know will realize that actually Lake Placid is a stunningly beautiful village, home to a few thousand lucky people situated in the Adirondack Mountains. Apart from man-eating crocodiles (sigh), Lake Placid is famous for its stunning scenery and numerous outdoor activities allowing you to enjoy the beautiful nature that exists all around the area.

Conquering Mountains

Home to the largest trail system in the US, the Adirondack Park offers some fantastic hiking with over¬†2,000 miles of gorgeous hiking trails. There are an impressive 46 High Peaks in this region, each over 4,000 feet, so perfect for all those hikers who are looking for a bit of a challenge. With so many mountains and trails to choose from, it’s no surprise that hiking and climbing is so popular at Lake Placid.

Hitting the Road

In addition to the many hiking trails, Lake Placid offers gorgeous biking trails with unrivalled mountain views and a wide variety of terrain to enjoy. There are plenty of paved roads to explore, and more challenging single track trails, so something for every level of competency and every taste. Cyclists can even test themselves on the official Ironman Lake Placid bike course. If that sounds too scary, just head out for a leisurely ride on the Brewster Peninsula Trails.

Fun on the Lake

What could be better on a hot summer’s day than cooling off in a mountain lake. One of the easiest areas to access not far outside Lake Placid is Cascade Lakes Day Use Area. If you prefer to stay out of the water (mostly anyway) then why not have a go at Stand-Up-Paddling? The daredevils among you can also try out whitewater rafting, but be prepared to get very wet if you do. You can also rent kayaks, explore the lake on a motorboat, or take things slowly and go fishing. Whatever you decide to do, you will be sure to be mesmerized by the breathtaking beauty of the lake.

So with exciting outdoor activity options and great hotels in Lake Placid, this is truly is a fantastic place to visit when you’ve had enough of sitting on the couch and want to get some fresh air in the beautiful outdoors. So now that you know Lake Placid is a great holiday destination and not just an ever so slightly terrible film, the only question is, what are you waiting for!?
