So there I was, sat in a huge great palace somewhere in Austria waiting for one of the famous Schoenbrunn Palace concerts to begin when I spotted him, Chris’s doppelganger (ironic as doppelganger is of course a German word meaning double-goer 🙂 )!…
…A few years ago Chris and I decided to treat ourselves to a little European mini-break. We were about to visit some friends in Slovakia, so decided to make Vienna our first stop and then take a train on to Bratislava. Being German I am naturally wary of Austrians ;-), so it was the first time I had ever been to Austria. And I have to say, what a pleasant surprise it was. So much so that Vienna may well be our second-favorite European city to visit for a weekend (…Rome being first, of course, owing to Chris being about 3% Italian).
Anyway, having strolled around Vienna and seen all of the beautiful sights the city has to offer, we decided to go and visit the palace that was once home to Emperor Franz and his beautiful wife, the Empresses Elizabeth aka Sissi. We decided to stay for the evening to watch one of the famous Schoenbrunn Palace concerts inside the beautiful Hall of Mirrors and listen to some Strauss music – what could be more Austrian than that (apart from Viennese Schnitzel of course)? So I sat down and was about to start speaking to Chris, when I suddenly realized Chris was behind me and hadn’t sat down yet. But surely the man next to me was Chris? …but…how…what the…
So not only did we discover Chris’s doppelganger on our visit to Vienna but even more spookily, he was sat right next to us at the concert. Which meant throughout the whole evening I was freaked out by the thought of having Chris to my right, and Chris 2 to my left.
Have you ever found your doppelganger while traveling?

I’d love to spot my doppelganger. I did run into someone who looked like a former co-worker when I was in Phuket, and another person who looked like a friend from back home when I was at a train station, but I’m still searching for my double.

Oh, amazing! Good luck Angela! Try out the concerts. Not only is the music and setting beautiful, but the whole audience gets involved. It is hilarious how some tourists get really excited about it all. I won’t name any Nationalities here though. 😉
I have never seen my own doppelganger (I had this theory that you can never see your own, but I guess Chris saw his, so there that goes, out the window!), but I did have a friend in college who had one and it was so bad we’d sometimes call out to her across the courtyard only to realize that, nope, that wasn’t our friend at all!
The question is, did Chris think this guy was his doppelganger, or was it just you? Did the doppelganger do a double take when he saw Chris?

I have never seen my own doppelganger either Steph. I think that would be really spooky. Chris didn’t realize until I showed him the photo later actually. I don’t think his doppelganger noticed anything though. I was dying to stand up in the middle of the concert and announce my findings to everybody, but I managed to control myself. 🙂
I have never seen my own doppelganger but I’m sure I must have a few as people are regularly convinced they know me and call me another name. WoW that must have been a really strange experience, having a doppelganger right next to you.

I must have a doppelganger too Freya, because I am always being told that I look familiar too. Very weird!
I may have found my doppelganger in the Dominican Republic, but she was a little girl. My brother snapped a photo of her handing me some mangoes and he pointed out that our resemblance is uncanny.

Oh, that must have been weird too. Seeing yourself in a little girl. Did you see the resemblance too or just your mum?
You should’ve taken a pic of the 2 of them side by side. That’d be sooo weird!! 🙂

I was too freaked out to take that photo Jill. But yes, that would have been good with hindsight actually.

That is freaky!! I’ve just arrived in Sydney and met another red head with so much in common with me. The more we learn about each other the weirder it gets!

OMG, that must be so weird to be talking to your doppelgaenger, who doesn’t just look like you, but also happens to have lots in common with you.
I see them all the time for other people – never for us!

One day Andrea – don’t stop believing! 🙂
Check out this story – I just read it yesterday and thought it fit with these comments perfectly. This woman went missing – her family found and identified her body. Or so they thought . . . it was her doppelganger. The missing woman showed up a week later, after her own funeral! They are planning to exhume the body to try to identify her.

OMG, what a story! Imagine the shock of the family when the woman was standing in front of their door after the funeral. That must have been a good doppelganger or maybe even a twin she didn’t know about…
Too funny! I’ve seen some people while travelling that look incredibly similar to friends I’d left at home. Weird but cool!
