White Night Melbourne, 21 February

If you find yourself in Melbourne, be sure to visit the White Night Melbourne festival which turns the city’s streets, parks, public spaces, and cultural institutions into a huge cultural festival by offering a wide variety of entertainment including illuminations, exhibitions, street performances, film screenings, installations, dance, music, and more. The event starts at 7 pm and goes on until 7 am, and with over 80 free events on offer, you won’t struggle to fill your time even if you last for the duration.

Shanda Opera on Sydney Harbour, 27 March – 26 April

The annual Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour is set, as the name suggests, in stunning Sydney harbour, with the iconic Sydney Opera House in the background. Not only can visitors watch an opera amidst this gorgeous backdrop, they can also enjoy some fine dining, magical sunsets, and the best accommodations Sydney has to offer. Each year shows a different opera and in 2016, it will be Turandot by Puccini. The story is set in China and is about Prince Calaf, who falls in love with Princess Turandot. To be able to marry her any suitor needs to solve three riddles but any wrong answer could result in death. Although Calaf passes the test, Turandot refuses to marry him but he offers her a way out: if she can learn his name before dawn the next day, he will die!

Telstra NRL Grand Final, 4 October

A visit to Australia wouldn’t be the same without watching a game of the nation’s much-loved sport of rugby, which American sports fans might recognize as the game that brought the NFL the star player Jarryd Hayne. To watch Australia’s best rugby league teams battle it out for the big trophy, why not head to the NRL Telstra Premiership Grand Final? You are bound to be rewarded with a buzzing atmosphere among 100,000 spectators at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium.
