For fans of snow-capped mountains and crystal-clear lakes, the U.S. state of Colorado is a great holiday destination for those seeking a little adventure in their lives. Forming part of America’s famous Mountain States, Colorado has a number of peaks suitable for amateur ramblers right up to the most serious mountain climbers. This includes the famous Mount Elbert, which rises to an impressive 14,440 feet (4,401 metres) and is the highest point not just in the state, but in the Rocky Mountains in general. Of course, less arduous trekking options exist throughout the stunning landscapes on offer across Colorado, a state which is actually never less than 1,000 metres above sea level — meaning that, at all times, you are higher than the highest mountain in England!

Things to Do Near Denver

For those adventurous spirits tempted to visit Colorado, the state capital of Denver is a great place to ease yourself into your holiday, thanks to the city’s many bars, restaurants, and luxurious but affordable hotels. Just 30 minutes outside of Denver are many adventurous activities you could undertake, so you can easily start your adventurous holiday immediately.

Those without any fear of heights, for example, could try zip-lining on a course with speeds of up to 60mph on zip-lines up to 250 feet above ground. If you prefer water-based adventures, you could try out white water rafting. For class III or IV rapids, you could either go rafting just 30 minutes outside of Denver, or through the wonderful Royal Gorge Canyon and past a former gold mine. Make sure to hold onto your paddle — otherwise you will get absolutely drenched.

Little Adventures for Little People

For those visiting Denver as a family and seeking some child-friendly adventures, the Children’s Museum of Denver provides a great range of exhibits based around the four educational themes of explore, imagine, investigate, and create. Whoever said that learning can’t be fun?

Becoming One with Nature at Colorado National Park

If you now feel that it is time to get out of the city, you could visit the Colorado National Monument. It’s set in a vast and beautiful national park with towering monoliths, canyons, and plateaus, and populated with majestic eagles, bighorn sheep, and intrepid explorers just like you from all around the world.

Mountain Adventures From the Open Road

For those who really feel like dusting off those trekking boots, another popular option is to take a drive along the Mount Evans Scenic Byway, which is a long and winding road not too far from Denver. The route takes you high up into the mountains. From there, check out some of the more treacherous hikes.

As you can see, Colorado is a great place for those with an adventurous spirit, and there’s plenty to offer in Denver and the surrounding areas. With all of these great options available across the wild, rugged, yet stunningly beautiful state of Colorado, isn’t it time to send an email to your boss and ask for that well-deserved holiday?
